NFL rumors: Giants interested in free agent RB Dion Lewis?

The Giants are among the teams interested in former New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis, according to a report from Pro Football Talk.

Mike Florio lists the Giants among seven teams vying for Lewis’ services, including the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans.

Lewis, along with former Vikings running back Jerick McKinnon are considered among the top players at the position expected to be available when the new league year and free agency begins on Wednesday at 4p.m.

Meanwhile, the Giants are hosting former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart on a free agency visit Tuesday, underscoring the organization’s commitment to mine a veteran running back this offseason.

Last season, Lewis had a career-season with the AFC Champion Patriots, rushing for 896 yards while averaging 5.0 yards per carry and scoring six touchdowns in addition to catching 32 passes for 214 yards and three more touchdowns.

Giants lose out on Norwell … What now?

Running back is bound to be a position of focus for new general manager Dave Gettleman and the Giants this offseason, both in free agency and perhaps even investing the No. 2 overall pick in Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

Last season, the Giants ground attack was among the worst in the league, combining for just 1,549 yards as the Giants finished with the league’s No. 26 rated rushing offense.

Lewis would certainly fit in Pat Shurmur’s scheme because of his ability to be a home run hitter as a ball-carrier and threat as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
