Back To The Future

The New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins 18-10 on Sunday. The Giants will end the season with a record of 3-13, but on a good note with their first win since November 19, 2017 against the Kansas City Chiefs. (Photo Credit: Giants.com)

What Went Right- Coming into the game New York Giants running back Orleans Darkwa needed 153 yards rushing to earn a $200,000 bonus. He finished the day with 154 yards and a touchdown.  On the second play of the game, Darkwa took a handoff and ran 75 yards to the house. The Giants finished with 260 yards rushing, the most in any game this season. The young offensive line blocked well and allowed the running game to get going. On Sunday, the Giants defense looked the way it was supposed to this season. The Giants held Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and the Redskins to 197 total yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard had a great game recording six tackles and two interceptions. Cornerback Ross Cockrell also had an interception.

Due to the Indianapolis Colts winning their game, the Giants have locked up the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The last time they had the second overall pick, they drafted some linebacker out of North Carolina by the name of Lawrence Taylor. Will history repeat itself? New General Manager Dave Gettleman will have three of the top 66 picks in the draft to help him get the Giants back on track.

As a fan, you have to be impressed with Gettleman so far. Within 24 hours of getting the job, he got rid of a locker room problem and relieved one of the main draft decision makers of his duties. With the many bad draft choices they have made in recent years, it is good to have someone new making those draft decisions. Gettleman has also stated that he will run the draft himself. It is a breath of fresh air to see the General Manager of the New York Football Giants taking responsibility.

What Went Wrong- The Giants scored 12 points in the first 2:17 but were only able to score six points in the rest of the game. Yes, the Giants offense is extremely depleted, but these guys are paid to score points and were unable to do so for most of the game other than the early push. Kicker Aldrick Rosas had another kick blocked. Rosas has had a decent year, but has had way too many field goals and extra points blocked.

The 2017 season was hard to watch, but it is finally over. The Giants look to rebound in 2018 with a new General Manager and a new Head Coach.

This could make for a very Happy New Year!
